Germany, Hamburg. Medal for Service in the City Fire, 1842. (OEK 681)

On the morning of 5 May 1842, fire broke out in a cigar factory in the Old City, quickly spreading through the wooden buildings in the area. For three days and nights, the fire brigades were assisted by local militia units in fighting the fire. Nearly a third of the Old City burned and 51 people died, including 22 firefighters. The city was rebuilt quickly and the reconstruction included more modern building techniques and the introduction of fire-prevention construction.
