Uruguay. Medal for the Paraguay Campaign, 1865-1869, in blackened iron, with a copper sun suspension device  With red ribbon and prongs.

In 1865, the Triple Alliance (Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay) went to war with Paraguay over Paraguay's attempts to control the River Plate.  The result was the devastation of the Paraguayan economy and population. Paraguay lost over 40% of its military-age male population in the war of annihilation. Population figures did not cover until well into the 20th century.

Uruguay. Medal to the Victors at Yatay, 17 August 1865, Bronze; no ribbon.

In the Battle of Yatay, Paraguayan forces numbered about 3000 and faced the combined forces of the Triple Alliance (Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay), which fielded about 10,500 men. In a flooded battlefield, with retreat practically impossible, the Paraguayan forces were mostly killed or taken prisoner. Paraguay fought on until 1870, but lost nearly 70% of its male population in the process.
